The Carbon Trust Africa team have experience of working across Africa from Kenya to the Ivory Coast. With a growing team based in Johannesburg our local capabilities and track record are enhanced by our ability to access the wider resources of our London, UK-based parent company, and its 180 staff from over 30 nationalities, and our network of offices in Brazil, China, Mexico, UK and the USA.

Africa team:

Benjamin Curnier, Associate Director, Carbon Trust

Benjamin Curnier


Benjamin heads up the Carbon Trust’s Southern African office in Pretoria, South Africa. He is responsible for establishing, and growing the Carbon Trust’s operations in Southern Africa, in charge of business development, and delivery.

Prior to this, Benjamin was providing technical and strategic assistance to the NBI (National Business Initiative) as it implemented the Private Sector Energy Efficiency (PSEE) Programme in South Africa. This programme, supported by the Department of Energy and funded by the UK Department for International Development aimed to improve energy efficiency in commercial and industrial companies in South Africa through the provision of various services to assist companies in identifying and implementing energy saving measures.  

Benjamin joined the Carbon Trust from PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked as a consultant within their strategy group, working on engagements providing commercial due diligence (buy and sell side), and strategic advisory services.  He holds a Masters in Aerospace Engineering with French from Bath University.

Christelle van Vuuren

Christelle van Vuuren


Christelle is a Manager in the Carbon Trust’s Southern African office in Pretoria, South Africa, delivering various projects in the Business Services and Policy and Innovation units, working in both the private and public sector. She is a dedicated sustainability professional and technical specialist, with experience in corporate sustainability assurance and reporting, response to the carbon regulatory landscape, asset retirement obligations in mining and renewables sector, environmental strategy and reporting systems development, emissions inventorying and impact reporting, green bonds assurance and environmental due diligence.

Christelle joined Carbon Trust with eight years’ experience providing sustainability and environmental consulting services, and started her career as a production engineer for a vanadium mining and beneficiation operation. She holds a Chemical Engineering degree, with Honours in Environmental Engineering and Management of Technology respectively, from the University of Pretoria, and has passed CFA Level 1.

Antoinette Gous

Antoinette Gous


Antoinette is an Analyst in the Carbon Trust Africa team. She is responsible for the delivery of projects that range from small scale advisory to large scale implementation programmes.  Before this role, she worked for PwC in the Sustainability and Climate Change department where she gained experience in sustainability assurance, asset retirement obligations, environmental due diligence, climate change adaptation and mitigation and compliance audits.  She has worked with clients both locally and in other Southern African countries.  She holds a BSc Hons in Environmental Management from the University of Pretoria.

Dominic Burbridge, Associate Director, Carbon Trust

Dominic Burbridge


Dominic has over 15 years’ experience working in business management and strategy, low carbon, resource efficiency and renewable energy consulting. He is on the Management Team of the Carbon Trust’s Business Services practice with responsibility for project leadership, business development and client management. His sector experience spans construction, building materials, hospitality & leisure, catering equipment and retail. He holds a BEng Hons in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon.

John Newton, Associate Director, Business Development, Carbon Trust

John Newton


John leads on Assurance Services at the Carbon Trust, and since 2008 he has helped organisations gain recognition of their environmental achievements through independent endorsement. He also engages organisations to enable them to drive sustainability agendas within their own operations as well as across their value chains to enable sustainable growth, with a focus on themes such as circular economy, science based target setting, supply chains innovation, and resource efficiency. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, John brought almost 20 years of business strategy experience gained mainly in the ICT sector. John holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
