The Carbon Trust Africa team have experience of working across Africa from Kenya to the Ivory Coast. With a growing team based in Johannesburg our local capabilities and track record are enhanced by our ability to access the wider resources of our London, UK-based parent company, and its 180 staff from over 30 nationalities, and our network of offices in Brazil, China, Mexico, UK and the USA.

Africa team:

Benjamin Curnier, Associate Director, Carbon Trust

Benjamin Curnier


Benjamin heads up the Carbon Trust’s Southern African office in Pretoria, South Africa. He is responsible for establishing, and growing the Carbon Trust’s operations in Southern Africa, in charge of business development, and delivery.

Prior to this, Benjamin was providing technical and strategic assistance to the NBI (National Business Initiative) as it implemented the Private Sector Energy Efficiency (PSEE) Programme in South Africa. This programme, supported by the Department of Energy and funded by the UK Department for International Development aimed to improve energy efficiency in commercial and industrial companies in South Africa through the provision of various services to assist companies in identifying and implementing energy saving measures.  

Benjamin joined the Carbon Trust from PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked as a consultant within their strategy group, working on engagements providing commercial due diligence (buy and sell side), and strategic advisory services.  He holds a Masters in Aerospace Engineering with French from Bath University.

Christelle van Vuuren

Christelle van Vuuren


Christelle has over ten years' experience in climate change strategy and energy, reporting and regulatory responses, and green finance developments. She joined the Carbon Trust in 2017 and focuses on the delivery of a variety of projects, working in both the private and public sector to help them set science-based targets and quantify the carbon offsets of products and services. Christelle also works on the UK DFID Transforming Energy Access Programme, supporting work in South Africa.

Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, Christelle worked as a corporate sustainability consultant focusing on assurance and reporting, mining and renewable energy environmental provisions, environmental strategy and reporting systems development, green bonds assurance, environmental due diligence and internal auditing. She was also the team lead for advice on the South African carbon regulatory landscape, and a technical specialist supporting natural capital impact valuation services. Prior to this Christelle worked as a process engineer in environmental consulting conducting air quality impact assessments, and started her career as a production engineer for a vanadium beneficiation operation.

Christelle has an honours degree in Environmental Engineering and a degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Antoinette Gous

Antoinette Gous


Antoinette is responsible for the delivery of projects ranging from discrete advisory projects to large scale implementation programmes, notably working on the delivery of the Market Intelligence business line of the African Development Bank’s Green Mini-Grid Market Development Programme. Antoinette also supports the UK DFID Transforming Energy Access Programme and also undertakes Carbon Trust Standard certifications for a range of private sector organisations.

Prior to joining the Carbon Trust Antoinette worked for PwC in the Sustainability and Climate Change department. She has worked with clients across South Africa and in other Southern African countries.

Antoinette holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management from the University of Pretoria.


Gracia Munganga


Gracia is a Manager in the Carbon Trust’s Southern African office in Pretoria, South Africa.   She has over seven years of combined experience in the South African waste and biogas industry.

Before joining the Carbon Trust, Gracia was Senior Manager at The Innovation Hub responsible for overseeing the operations of the Climate Innovation Centre South Africa (CICSA) mandated with the commercialisation clean tech innovations in the energy, water and waste sectors, in collaboration with the WorldBank InfoDev programme.  Prior to this, Gracia worked on the New Horizons Waste to Energy Project - Africa’s first large scale municipal solid waste to biogas plant - for the local office of Anaergia, a global biogas engineering and equipment manufacturer, and GreenCape Sector Development Agency.

Gracia is a graduate of the University of Cape Town (UCT, South Africa) with a BSc and Msc in Chemical Engineering.


Churchill Agutu


Churchill is responsible for the delivery of a variety of projects including carbon footprint assessments, carrying out TCFD data analysis and market intelligence research for energy access projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Prior to joining Carbon Trust, Churchill worked as a climate change advisor at an advisory firm in Johannesburg, South Africa. There he worked on a range of projects, including a market study into South Africa’s smart grid market, the registration a landfill gas flaring project under the Verified Carbon Standard, assisting companies with carbon disclosure, and developing their emissions inventories.

Churchill has a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is alumni of the ETH Zurich Winter School on Low Carbon Development Strategies for low to middle-income countries, myclimate.org’s Youth Encounter on Sustainability, and the 2018 Erice International Summer School on Materials for Energy and Sustainability.

Dominic Burbridge, Associate Director, Carbon Trust

Dominic Burbridge


Dominic has over 15 years’ experience working in business management and strategy, low carbon, resource efficiency and renewable energy consulting. He is on the Management Team of the Carbon Trust’s Business Services practice with responsibility for project leadership, business development and client management. His sector experience spans construction, building materials, hospitality & leisure, catering equipment and retail. He holds a BEng Hons in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon.

John Newton, Associate Director, Business Development, Carbon Trust

John Newton


John leads on Assurance Services at the Carbon Trust, and since 2008 he has helped organisations gain recognition of their environmental achievements through independent endorsement. He also engages organisations to enable them to drive sustainability agendas within their own operations as well as across their value chains to enable sustainable growth, with a focus on themes such as circular economy, science based target setting, supply chains innovation, and resource efficiency. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, John brought almost 20 years of business strategy experience gained mainly in the ICT sector. John holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
